The Bloody City is fun but forgettable
The Bloody City: The Siren's Song Book 2 By Megan Morgan Pub Date: November 10, 2015 Description On the run . . . It's been four months since the head of the Institute of Supernatural Research was murdered. But that doesn't mean June Coffin is out of hiding yet. In a world where being different can get you killed, it's best to keep a low profile. Especially for a Siren who can control other people with the call of her voice. That goes double if your powers might be inexplicably growing… On the hunt . . . But June isn't the only one trying to clear her name. There's Sam, the charismatic paranormal rights leader, and Micha, the first human on record to go paranormal. All of them must bargain with a mysterious vampire named Occam Reed if they want to stay alive. Out of time . . . As tensions increase between humans and paranormals, June must decide who to trust. If only she could hear the song inside her heart… Review While The Bloody City is not a masterpiece of urban fantasy, it is entertaining. The novel has more than a little romantic angst, and the dialogue is far from spectacular. (Albeit memorable, I'll pee on you is an interesting threat coming from a woman). It is funny, though I have my doubts that it was meant to be. It reads a bit like a telenovela - dramatic, lots of angst filled sex/relationship bits, and very overdrawn bad guys who clearly have the most fun. Most of the novel is spent passing time in one safe house or another, and as expected there is one great way of passing time - ie. Sex. Morgan's vampires are far from glittery. Their lack of hygiene is horrific, and not well explained by their resistance to disease. How becoming difficult to kill equates with losing table manners baffles me. Regardless, Occam is an entertaining anti-hero who really loves to irritate people. I wasn't too impressed by June Coffin, in part because I don't equate trash talk with strength. Neither does she use her abilities for anything interesting. She does come across as smarter than Sam Haiin, who regardless of the number of times he's described as the world's smartest man, comes across as merely arrogant and oblivious - albeit skilled at using his shifting abilities to appear a buxom Amazon. Like one of those movies that are so cheesy they are fun to watch, The Bloody City is a fun way to pass the time, but definitely not worth a second read. 3/5 The Bloody City is the second Siren's Song novel. I received a copy of The Bloody City from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. --Crittermom http://muttcafe.com/2015/11/the-bloody-city/
