It is easy to become addicted to Joy Ellis’s novels. Her police procedurals would make excellent movies. The cases are complex, compelling and always unique. Her investigators are distinct individuals you come to care about. Their Lost Daughters features DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans. If you enjoy reading the Nikki Galena novels, you will definitely enjoy these as well.
Their Lost Daughters tackles a very difficult subject - the grooming of teens. Teens are being lured to parties where they are given alcohol and drugs and encouraged to “enjoy” themselves. The parties are far from innocent, and some of the attendees aren't seen afterwards. Two connected cases bring the ring to DI Jackman's attention - the disappearance of the daughter of a prominent local businessman and the discovery of a young woman’s body washed upon an isolated beach. The teen is found not long after wandering barefoot, drugged out of her mind. She and another girl were taken from one of the parties and she fears what may have happened to the other girl. Jackman and Evans also have a high profile cold case - the disappearance of a young girl a decade earlier.
Ellis does an amazing job weaving the varying plot lines together into a coherent whole. I don't want to give too much away. What I can say is that Their Lost Daughters is one of Joy Ellis’s best novels yet.
If you like complex British police procedurals with compelling characters, you will definitely enjoy Their Lost Daughters. Mature themes make this novel inappropriate for younger readers.
