I've always liked Charlaine Harris' Harper Connelly novels, so I was happy to have an opportunity to review the graphic novel version of Grave Surprise. It exceeded my expectations. The character designs accurately and appealingly depict the central characters, they captured aspects of their personalities through a wide variety of facial expressions and body language. The artwork is vivid and color is used well, with flashbacks in monochrome and the present action in vivid colors. The story is well suited to the graphic format.
Harper Connelly has a bond with the dead - she can identify bodies and how they died. She uses her talent to find missing people, to help families find closure. When a professor tests her ability in a historic graveyard with his class, no one expects Harper to discover a much more recent body - that of a young girl she had unsuccessfully tried to find over a year earlier. Harper and her brother are stunned to discover the girl's family is currently living in Memphis. When the professor is murdered a short time later it becomes clear that the killer had planned for Harper to discover the child's body...
The graphic novel version of Grave Surprise will appeal to readers who like urban fantasy and graphic novels as well as current fans of Charlaine Harris.
I received a copy of Charlaine Harris' Grave Surprise from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
The official graphic novel adaptation of Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris, the author of The Southern Vampire Mysteries!
Harper Connelly, a psychic capable of finding dead people and reading their last thoughts, discovers a grave in Memphis with two bodies: a man centuries dead, and a girl recently deceased. How the two bodies ended up together would be perplexing enough... but the sudden appearance of a third body the next morning makes this a mystery that perhaps even Connelly can't solve!
