Review
Readers are guaranteed a terrific mystery when they pick up one of Joy Ellis's procedurals. The Murderer's Son is a stand alone novel, rather than part of the Nikki Galena series. Don't be discouraged- The Murderer's Son is a thrilling read that demonstrates Ellis's understanding of human psychology as well as her ability to craft a challenging mystery.
Twenty years ago, a farmer and his wife were brutally murdered in a remote part of the Fenlands. The crime scene was one of the most disturbing the investigators had seen. Now a woman has been found killed in a similar manner. Suspects are few until a young investigative journalist comes to confess. But things are not that simple. He doesn't know how or why he would have committed the crime, and there is no physical evidence linking him. Is Daniel Kinder a killer, or is he delusional? Despite pressure to close the case, DI Jackman and Ds Evans don't take his confession at face value. When the killings escalate, the team bring in a forensic psychologist to help them determine if Daniel Kinder truly is The Murderer's Son.
Don't expect a straightforward case - The Murderer's Son has plenty of surprises in store. Joy Ellis's understanding of psychology is impressive, and she uses it to good effect. The investigators are unique individuals, very human and memorably quirky. I loved the old pop culture references - including Orac from Blakes 7. DI Jackman, DS Evans and their team are just that - a team of very different individuals supporting each other. They would be interesting to observe even if the case was less enthralling.
If you like police procedurals, you won't go wrong with Joy Ellis's The Murderer's Son.
