Review

Wow, simply wow. Joy Ellis knows how to keep her readers glued to the page. Killer on the Fens has a little bit of everything - a mysterious woman from DI Galena's father's past, an RAF base shrouded in mystery, catacombs, haunted marshes, crooked businessmen, and a serial killer with a knack for making bodies look their best. A bevy of long hidden secrets begin to unravel when an aspiring drug dealer is rescued from a deep trench on a rundown airbase. There are several competing plot lines, but Joy Ellis adroitly works the threads together. The result is resulting an astounding character driven mystery that leaves readers begging for more.

DI Galena, DS Easter and their investigative team are real people, multi-faceted, imperfect and utterly believable. They are the kind of people that you can admire and empathize with, even share a joke or two. Rory, the medical examiner always has something interesting to say. His acerbic wit matching well with his intellect and ebullient personality. I'm glad that he had a large role in Killer on the Fens.

When it comes to British police procedurals, Joy Ellis numbers among the best writers of the genre. Killer on the Fens is certain to satisfy fans of the series and newcomers alike.

5/5

I received a copy of Killer on the Fens from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Description

DETECTIVE NIKKI GALENA’S DYING FATHER HAS ONE FINAL REQUEST: “FIND EVE.”

DI Nikki Galena faces a personal challenge which will stretch her to the limit. She must fulfil her father’s dying wish and discover who the mysterious Eve is. Meanwhile a dead drug dealer is found on an abandoned airfield that the locals say is haunted. The trail of both mysteries will lead to the most shocking discovery of Nikki’s career and put her whole team in mortal danger.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending.

THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on the criminals who she thinks did this to her.

HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.
