Review

If you enjoy British police procedurals, Joy Ellis is an author you definitely do not want to pass by. She is a gifted storyteller, successfully developing compelling plots that are dynamic and dramatic. Her investigating team led by DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter have the feel of real individuals with varying strengths and weaknesses, not without flaws but working well together despite their flaws.

Shadow Over the Fens places DS Joseph Easter front and center after his return to duty. In addition to working a case of a suicide that is more than it appears, a ghost from Easter's past has returned to haunt him. But is it really the man Easter believes? Not only has no one else gotten a close view of Billy Sweet, bodies are being discovered- each resembling Sweet physically, each murdered in the same distinctive way.

Shadow Over the Fens gives readers a better understanding of what makes Joseph Easter tick. It also sees DI Nikki Galena mellowing a bit, easing back from her personal crusade. I liked the dual aspect of the novel - the investigation into suicides, particularly the strange death of Nikki's neighbor, and the targeting of DS Easter by Billy Sweet. Despite my laying things out simply, you can expect many thrilling twists and dramatic surprises.

Shadow Over the Fens easily matches Crime on the Fens in eloquence and complexity. Both are exciting, well written police procedurals that prove Joy Ellis is an author to watch. If you enjoy procedurals, Shadow Over the Fens is a fantastic choice.

Description

WHO CAN NIKKI TRUST WITH TWO BRUTAL KILLERS LOOSE ON THE FENS?

Someone terrible from DS Joseph Easter’s past is back . . .

DI Nikki Galena’s friend and neighbour meets a tragic end but there’s more to his death than meets the eye . . .

A man is found executed on a piece of wasteland in Greenborough town. The cold-blooded murder triggers terrible memories for DS Joseph Easter. Just when things seemed to be going well for DS Easter, he realises that the nightmare is coming back, threatening his career, his sanity, and maybe his life.

In a breath-taking conclusion even DI Galena begins to doubt him as he faces a race against time to save someone very close to him.

Set in the Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.
