Review
The Doppelgänger is a novel, rich in emotion but extremely troubling. It is a psychological thriller that shook me, even while I was unable to stop turning the pages. It is so difficult to draw a line between the real and the imagined. Like Darcy, the reader is entrapped in a web of fear and suspicion, unable to break free to communicate or share what she believes is reality. While it is clear that she has extreme mental health issues, Darcy is easy to empathize with. Her reactions are easy to understand within the context of her perceptions, beliefs, and memories. Very few people understand what it means to endure a mental illness, preferring to ignore or ostracize. Management is only possible with proper care and medication.
At the start of The Doppelgänger, Darcy shows paranoia and evidence of hallucinations. Still, she manages until two things happen - a blog appears detailing her life and her memories, things only she would know and a psychiatrist that she believes is responsible for her mother's death gives a talk at the university. Darcy's world starts to collapse and she fears for her life. Who is writing the blog? How does she know so much? When the psychiatrist is murdered, Darcy becomes the main suspect, and it becomes more important than ever to unravel the truth.
The sheer emotional power of the writing overcomes minor flaws in the text. The Doppelgänger is a thriller that gives insight into the devastating reality of life with an untreated mental illness.
