Scare up a Copy of The Skeleton Haunts a House
The Skeleton Haunts a House: A Family Skeleton Mystery By Leigh Perry
Pub Date: October 6, 2015
Sid the Skeleton bones up on clues to solve a Haunted House homicide in this mystery from the author of The Skeleton Takes a Bow…
What holiday could bring more warmth to a skeleton’s chest cavity than Halloween? And when you’re a living skeleton who’s not supposed to be seen outside the house, it’s a welcome chance to get some fresh air and rub bony elbows with people. That’s why Sid doesn’t mind wearing a full-body dog suit and going as Scooby-Doo along with Georgia Thackery’s Velma to the Halloween Howl.
Sid can’t wait to go through the Haunted House—but he gets rattled for real when a genuine dead body is discovered. Trapped inside as the police quickly seal off the crime scene, Sid makes no bones about dropping the dog suit and posing as an actual skeleton. This murder is a skull-scratcher, but as long as Sid is on the inside, he might as well case the joint to figure out who used the cover of darkness to commit the perfect crime…
Leigh Perry's Family Skeleton series is wonderfully original, and The Skeleton Haunts a House is a terrific addition. There are few characters as charming or memorable as Sid the Skeleton.
It's hard for a walking talking skeleton to go unnoticed, so when Halloween comes around, Sid is ready to celebrate. Dressed as the inimitable Scooby Doo with Georgia as Velma, Sid goes to the annual McQuaid Halloween Howl. His first stop is the Haunted House, but fun scares turn to real-life horror as a dead body is discovered.
To Georgia's surprise, her sister Deborah asks the duo to investigate. Sid, as usual is ready to jump right in. Balancing teaching with hunting for clues isn't easy for Georgia. Fortunately, she has her daughter Madison and her parents, newly returned from sabbatical as backup.
One of the things I love about Leigh Perry's novels is her gift for depicting the quirks of professional academia with humor and flair. From internal politics to the drudgery of adjunct existence she captures reality. Roxanne, the grad student obsessed with her never-ending dissertation is disturbingly realistic.
The Skeleton Haunts a House is a fantastic cozy with a terrific cast of well developed characters. It is not a paranormal mystery per se as the only magic is the mystery of Sid's unique existence. I can highly recommend The Skeleton Haunts a House and the rest of Leigh Perry's series to mystery lovers of all ages.
I received a copy of The Skeleton Haunts a House from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
