Foundryside A Novel
by Robert Jackson Bennett
Sci Fi & Fantasy
Pub Date 21 Aug 2018
In a world where writing can allow the rules that govern nature to be bent, one young thief holds the key to the future in her hand. Foundryside immerses the reader in a world where technology is founded not on electricity or steam, but on sequences of sigils that compel objects to reinterpret the nature of reality. Sancia is a talented young thief gifted with the ability to “know” materials through touch. After a large job goes drastically wrong, Sancia discovers that what she stole is a priceless artefact - a key that can open any lock. More than that it is a piece of ancient technology that the merchant houses would kill to acquire. To survive, Sancia must find allies and counter the forces set on possessing the artefact and gaining unimaginable power.
Bennett has created an incredible world of magic and intrigue that invites the reader to linger. There is plenty of action, and more...
Unquiet Dead by Chris Pavesic

Unquiet Dead is not a novel. It is too short and the plot is too simplistic. It works better as a short story or novella. As long as you keep this in mind and ignore the loose ends and other annoying bits (the purposely misspelled words drove me a bit batty), Unquiet Dead isn’t a bad read.
Basically temples are being destroyed and people are being killed. There are reports of unkillable monsters (zombies) leaving few survivors. Catherine is tasked with uncovering whether the fae are behind the attacks.
Unquiet Dead is amateurish, but shows some promise. I wouldn’t buy it, but I probably would give Chris Pavesic another chance in future.

I received a copy of Unquiet Dead from the publisher and Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
With its gorgeous and sultry illustrations and its hip steampunk storyline, Lady Mechanika is a graphic novel that makes for an excellent read. Part woman, part machine, the beautiful Lady Mechanika knows nothing of what came before her awakening. Who she is and where she comes from are questions that lie behind her every act. Her exploits are legendary, but is she the person she is believed to be? The inventor Lewis provides her with the technology that aids her in her cases and provides valuable backup.
Lady Mechanika is a fun, action packed adventure with monstrous technology and vivid illustrations. Often over the top, the first volume of this steampunk series is easily enjoyed by teens and adults.

The Alchemists of Loom makes for a promising debut to Elise Kova’s new fantasy series. The novel blends steampunk and fantasy to create a rich and varied world divided between Dragons and humans (called Fenthri). Ari is the White Wraith, an expert thief for hire and militant enemy of the Dragons. When a chance meeting with a Dragon offers her the chance to realize her dreams of revenge, Ari decides to risk everything and help him. Along with her apprentice Sophie, Ari and Cvareh embark on a deadly race against time, evading the Dragon Riders in pursuit.
There are many detailed, cinematic action sequences. The characters on the whole are complex. But somehow I wasn’t as immersed in the story as I would have liked. I think a bit more detail is needed. By the end, however, I was looking forward to seeing what the next insta...
City of Wolves is short for an ebook. I went in expecting more of a novel so I was a bit disappointed by the story's limitations. The description bills City of Wolves as gas lamp noir, but I see it as more of a straight fantasy mystery - light on mystery.
Alexander Drake is hired to investigate a noble's murder. The body was discovered naked, covered in bites and lacerations. A Ministry investigator is also assigned to the case. There isn't much depth - extremely obvious werewolves involved and that the dead man is likely a werewolf. The investigator tries to frame Drake to keep him from shouting "werewolf" and the Vicar (an underworld leader) is introduced solely to get Drake out of prison.
All said and done City of Wolves is a middle of the road book, not good, not bad. Willow Palecek writes well, but I feel she would have been better served develo...
The Transference Engine is an imaginative departure from standard steampunk fare. While there are the expected airships an unusual devices, there is also an intriguing form of magic - necromancy. Followers of the Lord Byron, poet and the head of the cult of necromancy, seek to place the dead man's soul into another body. For that they need the Transference Engine and the knowledge of Madame Magdala and Byron's genius daughter Ada Byron King, Countess of Lovelace.
Meanwhile, on the eve of Queen Victoria's coronation, a mysterious threat looms. Young women are disappearing including two of the helpers from Magdala's cafe. Whispers of a plot targeting the coronation as well as the reform movements targeting necromancers abound. To top everything off, Magdala’s lover appears involved.
The Transference Engine is an exciting adventure, whose lead i...

The Custodian of Marvels brings the saga begun in The Bullet Catcher’s Daughter to a thrilling conclusion that not only makes for a magnificent finish, but effectively ties up all important threads.
Elizabeth Barnabus needs to find what is so valuable about The Bullet Catcher’s Handbook. It may be the only thing able to keep her and Tinker from starvation or imprisonment. As a woman and a fugitive her options are limited. She is intelligent and versatile, but even her ability to disguise is not impervious. Her allies are few and her resources are limited. The lesser position of women within the Republic makes justice and fair treatment impossible to attain. Women on their own are a target.
