THE QUANTUM MAGICIAN by Derek Künsken
General Fiction (Adult) , Sci Fi & Fantasy
Pub Date 04 Oct 2018
The Oceans’ cons are children’s games when compared to the heist central to The Quantum Magician. Derek Künsken’s novel is a masterpiece of character driven fiction, a hard sci fi heist that leaves the reader breathless from its scope. The universe is one where genetic engineering has resulted in three species at once human and alien - The puppets - miniature humans designed to experience religious awe in the presence of their creators, the quantum- beings of vast intelligence capable of discarding parts of their subjective persona to expand their perception and understanding, and the mongrels - beings whose forms have been engineered to survive in harsh aquatic environments, some of the most talented and most reckless pilots.
Belisarius is a quantum who long ago fled his world. His need for mental stimulation is satisfied by complex cons. W...
Lady Henterman's Wardrobe by Marshall Ryan Maresca
Berkley Publishing Group
Sci Fi & Fantasy
Pub Date 06 Mar 2018
Lady Henterman’s Wardrobe is not one of Marshall Ryan Maresca’s best novels. Still, it is entertaining, with plenty of fast paced action. Indeed there is so much action, there is very little room for plot.
Asti & Verni Rynax are criminals, but their goal is to protect their community, rather than to simply line their pockets. But good intentions aren’t always enough to solve problems. Plans as always go awry, but there is always some stopgap whether it is in the form of Verni’s inventions or Asti’s beast. Their crew is one of diverse talents. Things aren’t easy, but then again neither are they too difficult.
One small point that I disliked was the frivolous name. It made it difficult to take...
DOUBLE DOG DARE A Davis Way Crime Caper
by Gretchen Archer
Humor , Mystery & Thrillers
Pub Date 20 Mar 2018
Double Dog Dare is deliciously chaotic. Davis and her family and friends swoop from one misadventure to the next with scarcely enough time for the reader to take a breath. Throw in a huge cast of larger and weirder than life characters - including a dog that looks like a hairless mutant and is half as friendly (only eats cannelloni and thumbprint cookies) and smells like garlic - and readers definitely have a winner.
In this wacky caper, Davis’s sister , Meredith and Meredith’s best friend’s pooch, has been kidnapped by the pastor of Pine Apple and is being held for a million in ransom. On top of this, Davis has to deal with Vree who gives even the most talented talkers a run for their money, a smelly dog with a fascination for Madeline Albright, and a pair of lottery winners with an immense capacity for destruction - and that doesn’t even begin to cover a disa...
